Guardrails

Set a target range for a metric or practice that defines your team's preferred way of working.

Updated over a year ago

A Guardrail is a target range for a feature (driver). This range influences your ability to achieve a goal.

  • A Guardrail is not a requirement to set a Goal (and vice versa).

  • A Guardrail does not need to be linked to any Goal. i.e. they can be standalone,. unless there’s a mandatory link with an existing Goal.

  • Only one Guardrail per feature can exist.

Guardrails can be used to set an expected range of practice performance, as well as bring greater consistency across a team’s way of working.

Guardrails can also be set to support the team to achieve a Goal. This can be done by selecting a driver that most influences their ability to achieve their Goal.

Create a Guardrail:

Select the ‘Create’ button on the top right of your Guardrail hub page.

The Guardrail creation widget will then guide you through the following steps:

1. Select your Driver; Umano will then display your Usual, Peak and Current value for the selected Driver to help guide setting your target range

2. Define your Guardrail target range

3. As an option, you can link this Guardrail to an existing or new Goal

4. Finalise this set-up process by selecting ‘Create’ at the bottom of this widget.

Your Guardrail will then be displayed on your Guardrail hub.

Guardrails can not be set retroactively, i.e. they apply only from the moment of creation.

Edit a Guardrail

By selecting the three dots to the right of each Guardrail, you can edit an existing Guardrail.

The Guardrail creation widget will open for you to change the target range and link it to an existing or new Goal.

Monitor Guardrail Progress

Go to your Macro Cycle Tracker and select the relevant metric chart to view your team’s Goal progress.

On this page, you’ll see the following linked Guardrails displayed beneath the chart.

A Guardrail is ‘on track’ if the final value falls within or is better than the Guardrail range at that point in time (“better” to be defined for each driver).
